Public sector organizations face a distinctive combination of pressures: accountability for public money, strict audit requirements and limited IT budgets. Business Central online updates regularly, and every update raises the question of whether key processes still work. Page Scripting, now generally available in Business Central 29.0, helps answer that question without writing code.
The industry challenge
A council, public agency or arm's-length body using Business Central typically has a handful of critical processes:
- Purchase-to-pay with approval workflows and budget checks
- Grant payments to community organizations
- Income collection and allocation to cost centres
- Year-end and period-end closing
Before and after each major update, someone needs to check that these still work. In many organizations, that means finance staff manually following a test script document, clicking through each step and noting results. It's slow, inconsistent and easy to skip when people are busy.
Automated testing in AL is an option, but it needs developers. Most public bodies don't have AL developers on staff.
What Microsoft delivered in Business Central 29.0
Page Scripting lets users record actions in the Business Central web client, such as opening pages or entering data, and replay them later. Recordings can be saved and shared. It has been in preview since 2024. With Business Central 29.0 it moves to general availability.
According to Microsoft, the generally available version:
- Is fully localized and includes accessibility, usability and visual improvements
- Can select multiple rows in grids, so bulk workflows are captured accurately
- Can validate text shown in message and error dialogs, which turns recordings into real checks of expected messages and errors
Microsoft's stated value is that customers, consultants and testers can create repeatable user acceptance tests for real business processes without writing AL code.
Where the value shows up
| Business area | Impact for a public sector body |
|---|---|
| Update assurance | Replay critical processes after every update |
| Audit evidence | Recorded tests and results show that controls were checked |
| Staff time | Less manual clicking through test scripts |
| Control testing | Dialog validation confirms that approval and budget warnings still appear |
| Partner costs | Less reliance on paid consultants for routine regression testing |
The dialog-text validation is especially useful for the public sector. Many controls show up as messages, such as "budget exceeded" or "approval required." Now a test can check that the right message appears, not just that a page opens.
A worked scenario
Consider a district council that uses Business Central for purchasing and payables (an illustrative example). Its internal auditor wants evidence that the purchase approval workflow and budget control still work after each major update.
The finance systems officer records a script. It creates a purchase order above the approval limit, tries to release it and checks that the approval-required message appears. A second script selects several invoices in a list and posts them in bulk, checking the confirmation message.
When the 29.0 update arrives, the officer replays both scripts in a sandbox updated to the new version. Both pass. The recordings and results go into the audit file, and the update proceeds with documented assurance.
Adoption considerations
- Start with your top five processes. Record the processes whose failure would cause the most harm.
- Use a sandbox. Replay scripts in a sandbox, not production, especially when they post transactions.
- Check permissions. Recording and playback need appropriate permissions in Business Central.
- Keep scripts up to date. When processes change, update the recordings.
- Store results with audit evidence. Keep a dated record of each test run.
The bottom line
Public sector organizations need confidence that their finance systems keep working, and they need to prove it. Page Scripting's general availability in Business Central 29.0 gives them a code-free way to build that confidence into every update cycle. For teams without developers, it turns testing from an occasional burden into a repeatable routine.
If your organization wants to strengthen how it tests Business Central updates, an experienced adviser can help you choose and record the right scripts.
