Insurers move a lot of money through their bank accounts: premiums in, claims out, reinsurance settlements, broker remittances and refunds. Every one of those movements has to be reconciled, and in a regulated business the reconciliation has to be both fast and defensible.
The industry challenge
Automatic bank reconciliation in Dynamics 365 Finance uses matching rules to pair bank statement lines with ledger transactions. For high-volume accounts, that automation is essential. But in insurance, many transactions look alike. Premium receipts for similar amounts arrive on the same day, claim payments share payee names, and broker remittances bundle many policies together.
When matching rules are applied directly, a wrong match is only discovered later, often during a month-end review or a control test. Unwinding it takes time, and the finding itself can raise questions about the reliability of the reconciliation control. Some insurers react by limiting automation to the most obvious matches and doing the rest by hand, which wastes much of the benefit.
The gap is a checkpoint: a way to let automation do the heavy lifting while a person confirms the result before it becomes final.
What Microsoft delivered in Finance 10.0.49
Finance 10.0.49 adds the ability to preview automatic bank reconciliation matches and approve them before they are applied. The matching rules run as before, but users can review proposed matches and confirm them, rather than finding out after the fact what the rules did.
This gives organizations a way to extend automation to more complex matching rules while keeping a human checkpoint.
Where the value shows up
| Business area | Impact |
|---|---|
| Control environment | A visible review step before matches are applied, supporting reconciliation controls |
| Automation coverage | More confidence to use broader matching rules on complex accounts |
| Error prevention | Wrong matches can be caught before they are applied rather than unwound later |
| Productivity | Reviewers check proposals instead of matching manually |
| Audit | Clear evidence that automated matches were reviewed and approved |
A worked scenario
(An illustrative example.) A general insurer's treasury team reconciles its premium collection account daily. Hundreds of direct debits and card payments arrive each day, many for identical monthly premium amounts.
The team had kept automatic matching limited to exact reference matches because broader rules had once produced incorrect matches that took days to unwind. With the preview step, they introduce a rule that matches on amount, date and partial policy reference. Each morning, the reconciliation analyst reviews the proposed matches, rejects a handful that look wrong and approves the rest. Manual matching shrinks, and the reconciliation control now has a documented review built into it.
Adoption considerations
- Revisit matching rules. The review step makes it safer to introduce richer rules. Start with one account and expand.
- Define who approves. Decide whether the preparer can approve their own matches or whether segregation of duties requires a second person.
- Document the control. Update control descriptions so auditors understand how automated matches are reviewed.
- Watch reviewer fatigue. If reviewers approve hundreds of matches without looking, the control weakens. Focus review on lower-confidence rules.
- Measure and tune. Track rejected matches to improve rules over time.
The bottom line
Insurers need reconciliation that is both efficient and defensible. Previewing and approving automatic matches gives treasury teams the speed of automation with a deliberate human checkpoint, which suits a regulated environment well. It makes broader automation safer to adopt. If you are reviewing your bank reconciliation process, work through matching rules and approval design with an experienced Dynamics 365 Finance adviser.
