Plastics and injection moulding

Injection moulders run high volumes with tight tolerances. First-off inspections, in-process checks and final inspections happen around the clock. Any friction in recording results slows the line or tempts people to skip steps. Business Central's Quality Management extension, introduced in 2026 release wave 1, brings inspections into the ERP. Version 29.0 makes it noticeably smoother to use.

The industry challenge

A typical moulder inspects:

  • Incoming resin and masterbatch at goods receipt
  • First-off parts when a tool is set up
  • Samples during production runs for dimensions and visual defects
  • Finished batches before release to customers

When inspection tools are clunky, inspectors spend time on admin: assigning inspections, calculating passed and failed quantities, and working out where to move rejected stock. When an inspection blocks a shipment, warehouse staff see a vague error and don't know which inspection to chase. Shipments wait while people investigate.

What Microsoft delivered in Business Central 29.0

According to Microsoft, the Quality Management extension has been improved so inspectors and quality managers can complete routine tasks with fewer interruptions:

  • Self-assignment. When you edit an unassigned inspection, Business Central asks whether to assign it to you or leave it unassigned.
  • Automatic passed and failed quantities. When an inspection is finished, the inspected quantity is recorded as passed or failed according to the result, using the sample size or the base quantity.
  • Destination bins for inspected stock. Dispositions let you specify the movement method, quantity basis, destination location and destination bin, with assisted bin selection.
  • Resolve blocked transactions. When an inspection blocks a transaction, such as a sale or consumption, the error names the inspection and lets you open it directly.
  • Consistent rules and permissions. Quality rules and assignments are enforced consistently, including through indirect access, without needing broader permissions.

Where the value shows up

Business areaImpact for an injection moulder
Inspector productivityLess admin per inspection
Data accuracyPass and fail quantities calculated automatically
Stock controlRejected or quarantined parts moved to the right bin
ShippingBlocked shipments resolved quickly from the error itself
ComplianceQuality rules enforced consistently

The link from a blocked transaction to the responsible inspection is especially valuable in moulding. Shipments often go on tight delivery schedules to automotive or packaging customers, and every hour spent hunting for the cause of a block matters.

A worked scenario

Consider a moulder producing closures for a beverage packaging customer (an illustrative example). A final inspection is required before each batch can ship.

At 6 a.m., the warehouse tries to ship a batch and gets a block. With Business Central 29.0, the error identifies the open final inspection and lets the shift supervisor open it directly. The night-shift inspector had started it but not finished. The day inspector assigns it to herself, records the results, and Business Central calculates the passed and failed quantities. She moves the failed closures to the quarantine bin using assisted bin selection. The batch ships on time.

Adoption considerations

  • Review your inspection templates. Make sure sample sizes are set up so automatic quantities are meaningful.
  • Define disposition rules. Agree where failed and quarantined stock should go.
  • Train warehouse staff. Show them how to follow a blocked transaction to its inspection.
  • Clarify ownership. Use self-assignment, but agree how unassigned inspections are picked up across shifts.
  • Check permissions. Confirm that roles have exactly the access they need.

The bottom line

For injection moulders, quality checks are constant, and every bit of friction costs time on the line or at the dock. The Quality Management improvements in Business Central 29.0 remove much of that friction, from assignment to disposition to resolving blocked shipments. It's a practical step towards quality control that keeps pace with production.

If your inspections slow down production or shipping, it's worth reviewing Quality Management with an experienced Business Central adviser.
